IUD

An Intrauterine contraceptive device (IUD) is a small device that is made of plastic or copper and contains a synthetic hormone (a progestogen) and is fitted inside the uterus to provide long-acting contraception.

It provides highly effective (between 99.5-99.9%) contraception for up to 5 -10 years (depending on the device). It is a low maintenance, long-lasting, easily reversible and cost-effective method.

The IUD can also be used to manage periods and other gynaecological conditions including heavy menstrual bleeding and as part of MHT (Menopausal Hormone Therapy)

What to Expect during your visit.

Patients will need to have 2-3 appointments:

  1. Consultation and assessment: During this appointment the Doctor will discuss the IUD, how it works and which type is most suitable for you. The best time to insert an IUD will depend on a few factors, and this will be discussed with you. It is also important to exclude pregnancy prior to insertion. If you decide to go ahead, the doctor will provide you with a script for the IUD and discuss pain management options to ensure your comfort.
  1. IUD Insertion Procedure: The insertion appointment will take around 30-40 minutes (the procedure usually only takes around 10-15 minutes. You will need to bring your IUD device with you, and a written consent will be completed with your Doctor, as well as an opportunity to ask any more questions. Aftercare instructions will also be given – pain management, activities and effective times.
  1. Follow-Up: A follow up appointment 3-6 weeks after insertion is required to ensure everything is working correctly. A string self-check should be done monthly, and after that annual check-ups are recommended.

Procedure Fees:

Insertion or Removal & Insertion – Private fee of $200.00 with a Medicare rebate of $82.90

Removal Only – Long Consult fee of $134.00 with a Medicare rebate of $82.90
